SUMMARY:Virtual Moment - Conversation with Martin Abend TSSF
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we have a conversation with Martin Abend from Berlin\, Germany. Martin is an Oblate with the Third order of the Society of St Francis within the Church of England. This is a “secular” order. This means he lives and works independent from a Franciscan community. We’re excited to have Martin as our guest\, and learn more of what his monastic life in the city entails! \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Martin\n\n\n\n“I’m Martin\, 49 years old\, married with a daughter and live in Berlin\, Germany. I’ve grown up in a Baptist Church but was always interested in monasticism. Around 2007 I discovered my love for contemplation and liturgy and learned of the Third order of the Society of St Francis within the Church of England (TSSF). After 9 years of being a novice I just recently made my lifelong profession. In the Third Order we want to serve God in the spirit of Poverty\, Chastity\, and Obedience in everyday life and draft our own Rules of Life along the Rule of the order. Francis inspires me with his complete devotion\, his gifted spiritual wisdom as well as with his dual focus on contemplation and action.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place over Zoom. All individuals who RSVP will be sent the meeting information one hour before the event starts.

SUMMARY:Virtual Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Once a month we join together as a community to pray the divine office\, share in the divine meal of communion\, and sharing a conversation (see the topic below). This time is strongly encouraged for all who join us as Monastics and Practitioners. It is also open to anyone who wishes to join us. \n\n\n\nPlease come with bread and wine (or appropriate substitutes) so that you may particpate in communion with us. \n\n\n\nThis Months Conversation\n\n\n\nIt has now been 2 years that we have been at Urban Monasticism (started December 1\, 2019). In this conversation we want to reflect and share with one another how we’re doing? How has being a part of this enriched your life? How are we doing implementing our commitment and practices? Learn how Urban Monasticism can better support\, serve\, and equip you in living monastic lives. There is no need for you to personally share if you do not wish to\, but having a candid conversation will help us as we continue on this journey together.

SUMMARY:Virtual Moment - Imaginative Prayer
DESCRIPTION:In this Ignatian practice\, we use the power of the imagination to deepen our relationship with God. We become an active participant in a passage of Scripture by imagining the sights\, sounds\, smells of the scene and the thought processes of the people involved. Trusting the Holy Spirit to guide us\, we can gain new insights and allow God to minister to us in a fresh way. \n\n\n\nSheila Whittenberg\, one of our founders\, will be leading us through this wonderful contemplative spiritual practice from Berlin\, Germany. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place over Zoom. All individuals who RSVP will be sent the meeting information one hour before the event starts.

This balance comes in large part from the rhythms we build into our lives. This month we will be talking about “Resting in Rhythms to Lead a Simple Life.” We are excited to share and learn from each other in this time of conversation.

This work should not be done out of compulsion but from a posture of grace\, hope\, and love. We look forward to talking about this together. \n\n\n\nEngage with society to help build a better future for your city.To love our neighbors leads us to love our city. While not a primary focus\, we should support and help build a better future for our cities. Love without action is not following the love of Jesus who followed his love for creation to death for us all. As we work for the good of many we must resist the temptation to do so from a place of power. Yet Jesus being in his nature God chose to engage without using his position of power. Let us work in humility with hope alongside others.

On our commitment you’ll see that we talk about taking an annual retreat with God. This is a part of our annual rhythm that we must be intentional about\, must plan for\, and must prioritize. So lets talk about what it might look like\, what it does for us\, and how we can ensure this retreat doesn’t slip through the cracks. \n\n\n\nSeek retreat with God once a year.\nDuring his years of ministry Jesus would take time away from his work\, and find rest. Sometimes this rest was alone\, and other times it was in community. We should seek to get away at least once a year. Ideally this time should be in setting full of nature to help us reconnect with the earth in ways difficult in the city. While on retreat keep up with your prayer and fasting. During this retreat you should be disconnected from your lesser vocation.

On our commitment you’ll notice two which rhythms. We have previously talked about daily\, weekly\, monthly\, and annual rhythms. This conversation builds upon this as we look into the intersections and existing rhythms in our urban contexts. \n\n\n\nLive life with an urban rhythm.\n\nAt our core Urban Monasticism is a pattern and way of life we live together. Our ways of life adapt to the density and style of living in our context. We seek to live a way of life in the midst of the chaos of the city. The boundaries of the city serve as the walls of our monastery. These rhythms include living in a city dense with people\, walking and public transit as primary ways of movement\, and living in dense housing (both our dwelling\, and around us). Not living in an urban context would change the context of your life enough to be beyond some core aspects of what we are. You can participate\, but cannot be an urban monastic.

SUMMARY:Monastic Moment - Divine Office
DESCRIPTION:The Divine Office is the prayer of the Church\, for the people\, work\, and mission of God. Since the time of Jesus and the apostles the hours of the office have been a foundation of prayer each of us is invited to join into. Sometimes called the Liturgy of the Hours\, these structured prayers are a central monastic work. \n\n\n\nPaul Prins\, one of our founders\, will be leading us through this wonderful contemplative spiritual practice from Paris\, France. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place over Zoom. All individuals who RSVP will be sent the meeting information one hour before the event starts.

SUMMARY:Monastic Moment - Reflective Journaling
DESCRIPTION:One of the purposes of journaling is to bring things into focus\, making one’s faith practical in one’s daily life. Keeping a spiritual journal beckons us on an inner pilgrimage where we can record God’s story of our lives. On this journey we might be chroniclers or travelers or pilgrims. A journal can become a safe place for resting\, healing\, and for nourishment as we sort out God’s voice from the many others in our lives.  \n\n\n\nMelinda Means\, one of our monastics\, will be leading us through this wonderful contemplative spiritual practice from Berlin\, Germany. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place over Zoom. All individuals who RSVP will be sent the meeting information one hour before the event starts.

This is a part of our Commitment and hopefully this conversatio will help us to live out these values. We will likely touch on a few parts of our shared commitment that talk about vocation. The work we do as vocation takes up a large part of our time\, energy\, and focus. Let us together talk about how we can allow our vocation to be both spiritual work\, and a part of our worship to God. \n\n\n\nFrom the Commitment: \n\n\n\nVocation is spiritual work and to provide for your needs.\n\nWe are each called to work jobs where we are paid. You can work for someone else\, or for yourself. There are no restrictions on vocations\, but you should not work in a job where you are expected to harm others (even for the sake of protection). In the same way Jesus used his learned skills to make a living before his ministry started\, we should learn skills to make a living for ourselves\, our families\, and to allow us to be generous to others. This is spiritual work. It is a lesser work than our work of prayer and fasting\, but not to be disregarded\, or lack our attention.

SUMMARY:Monastic Moment - Lectio Divina
DESCRIPTION:Scripture is living and active as the Bible reminds us in Hebrews. Lectio Divina is a practice of listening to scripture read out loud while we allow the Holy Spirit’s presence to speak to us. When we quiet ourselves and meditate on the text\, we allow space to experience God and rest in his love and grace. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we learn how to practice Lectio Divina (Divine Listening). Anyone and everyone is welcome\, we will meet online\, and no previous experience with Lectio Divina is necessary. \n\n\n\nJordan Prins\, one of our founders\, will be leading us through this wonderful contemplative spiritual practice from Paris\, France. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place over Zoom.
