Walking with God as an Olympic Volunteer
This is a Meditation on a chapter of our Way of Life.
Help Build a Better Future for your City and Creation.
Last summer, I got to be a part of something really special in my city. It all started a couple of years back when I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Olympics! Living in Paris and having the games come through my city felt like a once in a lifetime event. It was an event that could be life-giving, or draining for those around. I was excited for the prospect of taking time to serve in a unique way. Serving both those in my city, and all those who visited for the games. I knew this use of my time and energy was not a church ministry. Rather, I could participate by creating a welcoming, fun, loving atmosphere in the city. I could use the Christ within me to offer my smile, my attitude, and my experience in previous work I’ve done. Christ within me to help people feel welcome and to make things run more smoothly.
As I stepped into my days volunteering, it was incredible to see the joy and excitement of those working with me. Paris does not have the strongest reputation for being jolly. Yet, the atmosphere of the games was undoubtedly making a positive impact on those volunteering. That joy I witnessed had a ripple effect throughout the city in the following days and weeks. The first few days were a taste of what followed. It confirmed I was taking part in a meaningful way to build a better future for my city and country. I got to be one of many who created something founded in peace, community, and the joy of competition.
Part of volunteering meant wearing a head-to-toe uniform each day I worked. It made us easy to spot walking around at events, as well as walking through the city, and taking public transit. On more than one occasion, I caught the eye of the subway conductor on my way to catch the train. Without hesitation, they gave me a big smile, a wave or a thumbs up, or even a “merci” (thank you) mouthed my way. It was so lovely to see people happy and grateful for the work of those they didn’t even know.
So what does volunteering for the Olympics have to do with building a better future with God? I think it has everything to do with it. I love that I get to walk through life partnering with what God is doing. I get to see things that God is mending, and the joy evident in others. In that partnership, I know I am in pursuit of making a better future for myself and my neighbors. When I pursue peace and unity in my city, I’m doing a small part in bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth. It doesn’t hurt to have a little fun along the way and participate in the sports you’re helping with either!
